If you fly with premium noise-cancelling headphones, it's a shame when the seat-back screen only takes wired ones. Most in-flight systems still use a 3.5mm headphone socket, and some older planes use a two-prong socket. A small Bluetooth transmitter bridges the gap: plug it into the socket, pair your wireless headphones and watch the film in your own headphones. All three picks also work in reverse, receiving Bluetooth from your phone and feeding a car's AUX input, which is handy in older rental cars.
Twelve South AirFly View: the best all-rounder
Twelve South AirFly View
- Built-in display with guided setup in 24 languages
- Up to 16 hours of battery
- USB-C charging
Best for: Frequent flyers who want the easiest setup and everything needed in the box
Check priceThe Twelve South AirFly View, launched in October 2026, adds something earlier AirFly models didn't have: a built-in display. The screen walks you through setup in 24 languages, shows which headphones are connected and the battery level, and gives on-screen volume and mute. Twelve South says it remembers your headphones and reconnects on its own over Bluetooth 5.3.
You can pair two sets of headphones for shared listening, or switch to Auracast mode to broadcast to compatible headphones, hearing devices and speakers. Battery life is up to 16 hours, charged over USB-C, and a menu switches it between transmit and receive modes. Twelve South includes a travel case and an international airline adapter in the box, and backs it with a two-year warranty.
What we like
- Screen takes the guesswork out of pairing in a dark cabin
- Airline adapter and case included
- Auracast and two-headphone sharing
What to consider
- Shorter battery life than the AirFly Pro 2
- Twelve South doesn't list high-resolution codecs on the product page
Who it's for: frequent flyers, couples and families who want the easiest setup with everything in the box.

iFi UP Travel Max: the best for sound quality
iFi UP Travel Max
- aptX Lossless
- LDAC and aptX Adaptive over Bluetooth 5.4
- Dedicated Qualcomm Bluetooth chip and Cirrus Logic DAC
Best for: Audiophiles flying with premium headphones that support aptX Lossless or LDAC
Check priceThe iFi UP Travel Max, announced on 29 October 2026, comes from British hi-fi brand iFi audio. Rather than one all-in-one chip, it uses a dedicated Qualcomm Bluetooth chip for the wireless link and a Cirrus Logic DAC with a hi-fi-grade amp stage. It supports aptX Lossless, LDAC, LHDC/HWA, aptX Adaptive (with a low-latency mode for films), aptX HD, AAC and SBC over Bluetooth 5.4.
A flip-out 3.5mm connector pops out when you press the power button, and a switch flips between transmit and receive modes. It pairs two headphones at once, supports Auracast via the iFi Nexis app, and has a built-in mic with Qualcomm cVc noise and echo suppression for calls in receive mode. iFi rates the 400mAh battery at 10 hours or more, and it weighs 25.7 g.
What we like
- Widest codec support here, including aptX Lossless and LDAC
- Hi-fi-style signal chain
- App with firmware updates and extra features
What to consider
- Shortest rated battery life of the three
- iFi doesn't list an airline adapter in the box
- You'll only hear lossless quality with headphones that support aptX Lossless
Who it's for: luxury travellers and audiophiles flying with high-end headphones.
Twelve South AirFly Pro 2: the longest battery
Twelve South AirFly Pro 2
- 25+ hour battery
- USB-C charging
- aptX HD support; pairs two headphones
Best for: Long-haul flyers who want the longest battery in a 16.5 g body
Check priceThe Twelve South AirFly Pro 2 is the long-haul workhorse. Twelve South rates it at 25+ hours of battery, charged over USB-C, enough for even the longest non-stop flights. It's also lighter than the iFi UP Travel Max (25.7 g) at 56.6 x 29 x 11.2 mm and 16.5 g.
It supports aptX HD for higher-fidelity audio with compatible headphones and pairs two sets of headphones at once. Twelve South says it can both transmit and receive audio. The standard box includes the AirFly Pro 2, a manual and a USB-A to USB-C cable. The Deluxe version adds the International Airline Adapter and a faux suede bag, so pick that one if you often fly on planes with two-prong sockets.
What we like
- Longest battery life here
- Lighter than the iFi UP Travel Max
- Two-headphone pairing
What to consider
- No screen, so pairing relies on lights and buttons
- Airline adapter only comes with the Deluxe version
Who it's for: ultra-long-haul flyers who want one charge to last the round trip.

How to choose an in-flight Bluetooth adapter

- Match the codec to your headphones. An adapter's best codec only matters if your headphones support it. aptX Lossless and LDAC need compatible headphones, and Apple AirPods use AAC.
- Check the socket. Most seat-backs use a single 3.5mm socket, but some older planes use two-prong sockets. Make sure you have an airline adapter if you need one.
- Battery vs features. If you fly 14+ hours, the AirFly Pro 2's 25+ hours is reassuring. A screen and Auracast (AirFly View) or lossless codecs (iFi) cost some battery life.
- Sharing. All three pair two headphones. Auracast (AirFly View and iFi) lets any number of compatible headphones listen in.
- Lip sync. For films, look for low-latency support such as aptX Adaptive's low-latency mode on the iFi.
- Car use. All three have a receive mode for older cars with an AUX input.
The adapter is only half the setup. Our verdict
For most travellers, the Twelve South AirFly View is the easiest in-flight Bluetooth adapter to live with: on-screen setup in 24 languages, up to 16 hours of battery, two-headphone pairing, Auracast, and an airline adapter and case in the box. If you fly with high-end headphones that support aptX Lossless or LDAC, the iFi UP Travel Max is built for sound quality. For the longest battery in a 16.5 g body, choose the AirFly Pro 2, ideally the Deluxe version with the airline adapter.

FAQ
Can I use AirPods with the seat-back screen?
Yes, with an adapter like these. Plug it into the headphone socket, pair your AirPods and the film's audio plays wirelessly. All three picks work with standard Bluetooth headphones and earbuds.
Are Bluetooth transmitters allowed on planes?
Many airlines allow Bluetooth accessories in flight, but rules are set by each airline and can change. Follow crew instructions, especially during take-off and landing.
Do I need an airline adapter?
Only on planes with two-prong headphone sockets. The AirFly View includes one, and the AirFly Pro 2 Deluxe adds one. iFi doesn't list one in the UP Travel Max box.
Can two people watch the same film?
Yes. All three pair two sets of headphones at once, and the AirFly View and iFi UP Travel Max also support Auracast for more compatible listeners.
Will there be a delay between picture and sound?
Some Bluetooth delay is normal. The iFi UP Travel Max supports aptX Adaptive's low-latency mode to help keep audio in sync with compatible headphones.
