A hammock can be a welcome extra for a backpacker. It turns two palm trees on a quiet beach, a hostel garden or a jungle campsite into a shady spot to read, nap or rest through the midday heat, and it packs down smaller than a water bottle. ENO (Eagles Nest Outfitters) is a long-established hammock brand, so we've compared its two classic nylon hammocks and the straps you need to hang them.

ENO SingleNest Hammock

  • 454 g (16 oz)
  • 2.9 x 1.47 m; 181 kg (400 lb) capacity
  • Packs to 13.5 x 10 x 12.5 cm in an integrated stuff sack

Best for: Solo backpackers who want the lightest, smallest-packing ENO hammock

Check price

The ENO SingleNest Hammock is ENO's one-person hammock and the lighter of the two. ENO lists it at 454 g (16 oz) with a 2.9 x 1.47 m body, and says it compresses to the size of a grapefruit: 13.5 x 10 x 12.5 cm in its integrated stuff sack. That sack has an internal stash pocket, so it doubles as a place to keep your phone and sunglasses while you lie in the hammock.

The fabric is ENO's FreeWave 70D nylon, which ENO describes as breathable and fast-drying, useful after a swim or a tropical downpour. ENO says the solid-colour fabric is bluesign approved. Seams are triple-stitched, and aluminium carabiners clip straight to the straps. The capacity is 181 kg (400 lb), and ENO recommends a hanging distance of about 2.8 m (± 25 cm) between anchor points.

What we like

  • Lightest and smallest-packing hammock here
  • Stuff sack is attached, so it's hard to misplace
  • Fast-drying fabric suits beach and humid climates

What to consider

  • Straps are sold separately
  • Narrower than the DoubleNest, so lying diagonally is a little less flat

Who it's for: solo backpackers who want a light, compact hammock for beaches, hostels and campsites.

ENO DoubleNest Hammock

  • 538 g (19 oz)
  • 2.9 x 1.92 m; 181 kg (400 lb) capacity
  • Packs to 15 x 10 x 12.5 cm in an integrated stuff sack

Best for: Couples, friends and anyone who wants more fabric to stretch out in

Check price

The ENO DoubleNest Hammock uses the same FreeWave fabric, carabiners and integrated stuff sack, but with a wider 1.92 m body. ENO lists it at 538 g (19 oz), only 84 g more than the SingleNest, and it packs to 15 x 10 x 12.5 cm, about the size of a coconut, as ENO puts it.

ENO markets it as a two-person hammock, and the capacity is the same 181 kg (400 lb). Even if you travel alone, the extra width is worth considering: more fabric lets you lie diagonally and flatter, which some people prefer for a long afternoon nap.

What we like

  • Room for two, or a flatter lie for one
  • Only 84 g heavier than the SingleNest
  • Same compact, attached stuff sack

What to consider

  • 181 kg capacity is shared, so check the combined weight for two
  • Straps are sold separately

Who it's for: couples and friends travelling together, or solo travellers who want extra room.

  • 255 g (9 oz); 181 kg (400 lb) capacity

Best for: Hanging either ENO hammock from trees or posts without tying knots

ENO's FAQ is clear that most of its hammocks don't include straps, so budget for a pair. The ENO Atlas Hammock Straps are ENO's own recommendation, and the hammocks' carabiners clip straight onto them.

Each strap is 2.8 m long with 15 attachment points, giving 30 combined adjustment points, so you can fine-tune the height and sag without tying a single knot. The webbing is 1000D polyfilament, which ENO compares to no-stretch seatbelt material, and it's tapered from 4 cm to 2 cm. ENO says the wider section helps protect trees, while the taper saves weight. The set weighs 255 g (9 oz), packs to 16 x 8.5 x 6.5 cm and is rated to 181 kg (400 lb). Reflective stitching helps you find them after dark.

What we like

  • No knots needed
  • Wide webbing helps protect trees
  • 30 adjustment points

What to consider

  • Adds 255 g to your pack
  • For wider gaps or larger trees, ENO also sells a longer Atlas XL

Who it's for: anyone buying the SingleNest or DoubleNest.

How to choose a travel hammock

Diagram titled “SingleNest vs DoubleNest, seen from above”, with two hammock outlines drawn to scale, each with a figure lying diagonally. ENO SingleNest, highlighted as best overall: 2.9 m long and 1.47 m wide, 454 g, packs to 13.5 x 10 x 12.5 cm. ENO DoubleNest, best for two: 2.9 m long and 1.92 m wide, 538 g (only 84 g more), packs to 15 x 10 x 12.5 cm. The subtitle says the wider DoubleNest lets you lie diagonally and flatter. A note says both have a 181 kg (400 lb) capacity, FreeWave 70D nylon and aluminium carabiners, straps are sold separately, and ENO recommends about 2.8 m (± 25 cm) between anchor points.
  • Single or double. A single saves weight and space. A double costs you very little extra weight and gives a flatter, roomier lie.
  • Straps. Check whether straps are included. ENO says the wider section of its Atlas straps helps protect trees.
  • Hanging distance. ENO recommends about 2.8 m between anchor points for these hammocks. Palms and posts on beaches aren't always that far apart, so longer straps can help.
  • Fabric. Fast-drying nylon suits beach and humid trips. Shake out sand before packing it away.
  • Local rules. Some parks, beaches and resorts restrict hanging hammocks from trees. Check signs or ask before you set up.
  • Safety. Hang low, check that trees or posts are sturdy and healthy, and stay within the rated capacity.

Our verdict

For most backpackers, the ENO SingleNest is our top pick: at 454 g, with an attached stuff sack and fabric ENO describes as fast-drying, it's easy to pack. If you travel with a partner, or simply want more room, the DoubleNest is only 84 g heavier. Whichever you choose, add a pair of ENO Atlas Hammock Straps, because ENO hammocks don't come with straps.

What's the difference between the SingleNest and DoubleNest?
