Hostel pillows vary. Some are fine, some are flat, and on night buses, overnight trains, camping stops and long layovers there's often no pillow at all. A packable pillow is a small, affordable way to make long backpacking trips more comfortable, and the air pillows here pack down to about the size of an egg or a fist. We've picked three from Sea to Summit, an Australian outdoor brand whose pillows are built for backpacking. All three work with Sea to Summit's PillowLock System, hook-and-loop patches that stop the pillow sliding off a camping mat.
Sea to Summit Aeros Premium Pillow: the best all-rounder

The Sea to Summit Aeros Premium Pillow is the pick if comfort matters more than the last few grams. Sea to Summit says the 2026 version adds a 5 mm layer of memory foam beneath the contact surface and a stretch-knit outer fabric designed for airflow. Under that is an adjustable air chamber that gives up to 12 cm of thickness.
The Regular size weighs 99 g (104 g packed) and packs to 11 x 8 x 8 cm. In use it measures 34 x 24 x 11 cm. The mini XPRESS valve combines a one-way inflate port, a quick deflate port and a fine-tune button, so you can let out a little air to soften it. The scalloped, concave shape is designed to cradle your head and work for all sleep positions. Sea to Summit makes the pillow with certified recycled nylon and polyester fabric, certified to the Recycled Claim Standard (RCS). Large and XL sizes are also available.
What we like
- Memory foam top layer feels less like sleeping on a balloon
- Adjustable firmness and thickness
- Still packs to about fist size
What to consider
- Nearly twice the weight of the Ultralight
- Hand wash only
Who it's for: backpackers on long trips who sleep in hostels, camps and night buses and want the most comfortable option.

Sea to Summit Aeros Ultralight Pillow: the lightest
Sea to Summit Aeros Ultralight Pillow
- 55 g (Regular)
- 57 g packed
- Up to 11 cm thick with adjustable firmness
Best for: One-bag and ultralight travellers counting every gram
Check priceThe Sea to Summit Aeros Ultralight Pillow is the one for one-bag travellers. The Regular size weighs just 55 g (57 g packed) and packs to 7 x 6.5 x 6.5 cm, which the brand compares to the size of an egg. Inflated, it's 34 x 26 x 11 cm and up to 11 cm thick.
It uses the same mini XPRESS valve as the Premium, so inflating, deflating and fine-tuning firmness is quick. The face fabric is brushed recycled polyester, which Sea to Summit says is RCS-certified recycled. There's no foam layer, so it feels more like a classic air pillow. A Large size is also available.
What we like
- Lightest pick by a distance, at 55 g
- Adjustable firmness
- Small enough to live in a daypack or jacket pocket
What to consider
- No foam layer, so less plush than the Premium
- Hand wash only
Who it's for: carry-on-only and ultralight backpackers who want a pillow they'll barely notice in the pack.

Sea to Summit Foam Core Pillow: no inflation needed
Sea to Summit Foam Core Pillow
- 160 g (Regular)
- Foam core with recycled Revive Loft insulation layer
- Rolls to 26 x 10.5 x 10.5 cm with built-in closure
Best for: Road-trippers and campers who prefer foam and want a machine-washable pillow
Check priceIf you don't like air pillows, the Sea to Summit Foam Core Pillow uses a foam core with a layer of recycled Revive Loft insulation that Sea to Summit says adds breathability and temperature regulation. You don't need to blow it up; just unroll it.
The Regular size weighs 160 g and measures 34 x 24 x 13 cm. It rolls to 26 x 10.5 x 10.5 cm and stays rolled with a built-in hook-and-loop closure, so there's no stuff sack to lose. It's also machine washable on a gentle cycle in a front-loading machine, which helps on long trips. Sea to Summit says the foam is upcycled from offcuts left over from its self-inflating mat production, and the materials are certified recycled under RCS.
What we like
- No valve to fiddle with or top up
- Machine washable
- Built-in roll closure
What to consider
- Heaviest and bulkiest pick, so it suits campers and road-trippers more than one-bag travellers
- Firmness isn't adjustable
Who it's for: campers, van-lifers and road-trippers who have a bit more space and prefer foam.

How to choose a packable pillow

- Packed size first. If you travel carry-on only, the Aeros Ultralight's egg-sized pack is hard to beat. If you have a big backpack or a car, the Foam Core's extra bulk matters less.
- Air or foam? Air pillows let you set the firmness and pack tiny. Foam needs no inflating and has no valve to leak overnight.
- Comfort layer. A foam top layer, as on the Aeros Premium, makes an air pillow feel softer against your face.
- Washing. On long trips, a machine-washable pillow (Foam Core) is easier to keep fresh. The Aeros models are hand wash only.
- Size. Regular sizes fit inside a sleeping bag hood. Large and XL suit side sleepers or anyone who wants a bigger pillow at camp.
- What you'll sleep on. On a camping mat, the PillowLock patches keep the pillow in place. On a bus or train, a smaller, softer pillow is easier to wedge against a window.
A pillow is one part of sleeping well on the move. Before a long trip, sort your phone data with a travel eSIM. Our best travel eSIM guide compares Saily, Yesim and Holafly. For cover on long trips, SafetyWing is one of the plans in our travel insurance guide. For dorm nights, a rechargeable headlamp and a carry-on travel backpack round out the kit.
Our verdict
For most backpackers, the Sea to Summit Aeros Premium Pillow is the best balance: a memory foam top layer, adjustable firmness, up to 12 cm of thickness and a packed size about as big as a fist at 99 g. If every gram counts, the Aeros Ultralight halves the weight and packs to the size of an egg. If you'd rather never blow up a pillow and want to throw it in the wash, choose the Foam Core Pillow.

FAQ
Can I use these pillows on a plane or bus?
Yes. They aren't neck pillows, but a partly inflated Aeros pillow can be placed against the window or behind your lower back. The Foam Core is better suited to camps and hostels than seats.
How do I inflate an Aeros pillow?
Open the mini XPRESS valve and blow a few breaths into the one-way inflate port, then press the fine-tune button to let out air until it feels right. Sea to Summit also says the inside-out Airstream pump sack from its sleeping mats fits the valve.
Which is lightest?
The Aeros Ultralight, at 55 g for the Regular size (57 g packed).
Can I wash them?
The Foam Core Pillow is machine washable on a gentle cycle in a front-loader. Sea to Summit says to hand wash the Aeros pillows with warm water and air dry them.
Are they made from recycled materials?
Sea to Summit says all three use materials certified as recycled under the Recycled Claim Standard (RCS). The Foam Core's foam fill is upcycled from offcuts from its sleeping mat production.
