Garmin's MARQ line has always sat at the top of its range. It's aimed at people who want a watch that looks at home in a hotel bar and still works on a mountain or a boat. The third generation adds two features frequent travellers will value: maps of the whole world out of the box, and messaging and location sharing without your phone. Here's what Garmin announced, based on its official press release.

The six new MARQ watches at a glance

Each watch has its own bezel, strap or bracelet and a set of exclusive, customisable watch faces. Garmin says these are inspired by classic designs such as the World Timer, Panda and Flieger.

Why it matters for travellers

Maps for anywhere, from day one

All third-generation MARQ watches come with preloaded TopoActive maps for the whole world, plus address search. Garmin says that means you can navigate to a specific address anywhere without downloading maps first. For a city break, a resort stay or a trek, that's one less job before you leave.

Messaging and live location without a phone

The headline change is built-in inReach connectivity. With an active plan, Garmin says you can:

  • make calls from the watch when it's connected to LTE
  • share a live location with family through the new Garmin Locate feature in the Garmin Messenger app
  • exchange text and voice messages, and get weather forecasts, over satellite or LTE
  • send an SOS message to the 24/7-staffed Garmin Response coordination center if something goes wrong

Garmin notes that an active plan is required, LTE coverage isn't available in all regions, and the watch's satellite and SOS features have important limitations compared with its other inReach devices. It advises checking its MARQ feature-requirements page before you travel to see what works where you're going.

Small extras that add up on the road

A built-in speaker and microphone let you use voice commands and reply to messages through a paired phone's assistant. The built-in LED flashlight is handy in an unlit hotel room, on a late arrival or for a beach walk after sunset. Health features include an ECG app (in supported regions), sleep and HRV insights, and morning and evening reports. The morning recovery report could help while you adjust to a new time zone.

The Aviator is the frequent flyer's pick

If you spend a lot of time in airport lounges, look at the MARQ Aviator. Garmin lists dynamic flight mapping, a dedicated UTC hand for keeping track of time zones, and aviation weather reporting, finished with a padded calfskin leather bracelet. The MARQ Diver is the resort pick. Garmin says its leakproof buttons protect the watch during scuba, apnea and snorkel use down to 40 metres, and it adds boating features such as autopilot control and tack assist.

How it fits into a premium travel kit

A watch that can message over satellite doesn't replace your phone's data. You'll still want a travel eSIM for maps, ride-hailing and video calls on your phone. Our best travel eSIM guide compares options like Airalo and Holafly. Location sharing also isn't a substitute for travel cover. Our take

The third-generation MARQ is a meaningful upgrade for luxury travellers, not just a style refresh. Worldwide preloaded maps and phone-free messaging over satellite or LTE address real travel needs, and the titanium, sapphire and ceramic build keeps MARQ firmly in luxury-watch territory. The Aviator suits frequent flyers and the Diver suits island and resort trips. Just check Garmin's plan requirements and regional coverage before relying on the connected features abroad.
