Planning a safari, a coast break or a remote-work stint in Kenya? There’s now a new step before entry: mandatory Kenyan government health insurance, and your usual travel policy doesn’t count towards it.
Here’s what official UK and U.S. sources say, who is exempt, and why general travel cover and mobile data are still worth adding on top.
What changed on 5 October 2026
GOV.UK’s Kenya entry requirements state that from 5 October 2026, most travellers visiting Kenya for less than 12 months must have Kenyan Government-provided travel health insurance.
Key points from GOV.UK:
- If you need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA), you must buy this insurance as part of the application process.
- If you already hold a valid eTA, you must obtain the insurance through the Kenyan eCitizen insurance portal.
- Foreign travel insurance policies are not accepted in place of this requirement.
- The insurance is valid for 90 days and can be used for multiple entries into Kenya during that period.
- GOV.UK still advises you to have travel insurance that covers your individual needs — the government product does not replace a full trip policy for everything else you may want covered.
The U.S. Embassy in Kenya’s routine message of 16 October 2026 aligns on the practical steps:
- Purchase Kenyan health insurance as part of the eTA process at https://etakenya.go.ke/, or via https://insurance.ecitizen.go.ke/dashboard/travel, and save a copy of the electronic policy.
- Travellers with approved eTAs who have not bought insurance must still purchase it before arrival.
- Airlines have been asked to check passengers’ insurance policies before boarding.
- Travellers who arrive without insurance may not be granted entry.
Who must buy it — and who is exempt
| Group | Required? |
|---|---|
| Most short-stay tourists / visitors under 12 months | Yes |
| Kenyan citizens | No (GOV.UK) |
| Holders of valid Kenyan residence status | No (GOV.UK) |
| Citizens of East African Community (EAC) partner states | No (GOV.UK) |
| Transit passengers not clearing Kenyan immigration | No (GOV.UK) |
| Diplomats and crew members | Exempt per U.S. Embassy Kenya message |
Check your own nationality and ticket type against the official portals and your embassy’s advice. Sources word the exemption lists slightly differently, and the Kenyan authorities set the rules.
How to buy it (official channels only)
- Starting a new eTA: complete insurance as part of the application at etakenya.go.ke.
- Already have an eTA: buy through insurance.ecitizen.go.ke/dashboard/travel before you travel.
- Save the electronic policy (PDF or app copy) and keep it offline as well as in the cloud — boarding staff may ask to see it.
- Ignore lookalike sites. Use the official .go.ke domains linked by GOV.UK and the U.S. Embassy.
The U.S. Embassy message also lists a contact number for help: 020 363 6000 in Kenya, or +254 20 363 6000 from outside Kenya.
Why you still want broader travel insurance
The Kenyan government product exists to meet a mandatory health entry requirement. It isn’t necessarily the policy you’d choose for:
- Trip cancellation or interruption
- Lost or delayed baggage and gadgets
- Adventure or safari activities beyond the local policy’s scope
- Longer multi-country itineraries (Kenya plus Tanzania, Uganda, or onward flights)
- Evacuation wording you’d want for remote parks
GOV.UK explicitly says you should still make sure you have travel insurance that covers your individual needs. Private policies such as SafetyWing or Heymondo are general travel medical and trip cover: they do not meet Kenya’s entry requirement, because GOV.UK says foreign policies are not accepted. Buy the government product through the official portals as well.

Read every policy’s medical, activity and gadget wording yourself before you buy. inventgo does not sell the Kenyan government product and cannot replace official advice.
Connectivity for safari and coast days
Mandatory insurance gets you through the gate; data gets you through the rest of the day — ride apps in Nairobi, lodge Wi-Fi gaps, maps on the coast, and two-factor codes when you rebook.
- Install a travel eSIM before departure over Wi-Fi.
- Check the plan’s coverage list includes Kenya (and any second country on a safari circuit).

Before you fly: eSIM and insurance
Treat Kenya entry as a checklist, not a single purchase:
- Kenyan government health insurance via eTA or eCitizen — mandatory for most tourists from 5 October 2026.
- General travel insurance for trip and medical needs beyond the entry product (it does not replace the mandatory policy). SafetyWing · Heymondo · guide
- Travel eSIM installed before you fly. Airalo · Holafly · Nomad · guide
- Passport validity — GOV.UK notes at least 6 months after arrival and blank pages; confirm with your airline.
- Yellow fever certificate if arriving from a listed transmission-risk country (see GOV.UK / TravelHealthPro).
FAQ
Can I use my home-country travel insurance instead?
No for the entry requirement. GOV.UK states foreign travel insurance policies are not accepted in place of Kenyan government-provided travel health insurance.
How long does the Kenyan policy last?
90 days, with multiple entries allowed during that period (GOV.UK).
What if my eTA is already approved?
Buy the insurance on the eCitizen insurance portal before arrival. The U.S. Embassy says travellers with approved eTAs who skipped insurance must still purchase it before they arrive.
Will my airline check?
Airlines have been asked to check policies before boarding. Arriving without insurance may result in refused entry.
I’m only transiting Nairobi — do I need it?
GOV.UK exempts transit passengers who are not passing through Kenyan immigration control. If you clear immigration or leave the airside transit area, check the official rules for your ticket.
Does this replace SafetyWing or Heymondo?
No. Treat the government product as the entry ticket and keep separate general travel cover for broader trip risks. The reverse also holds: SafetyWing or Heymondo cannot stand in for the Kenyan policy. See our digital nomad insurance comparison.
Conclusion
Kenya’s new rule is simple in intent and strict in practice: most short-stay visitors need government travel health insurance bought through official eTA or eCitizen channels, foreign policies don’t substitute, and airlines may check before boarding. Buy the local product through the official portals and save the PDF. Then add the general travel insurance and eSIM you’d want on any long-haul safari or coast trip.
