Hostel kitchens, campsites and overnight buses have one thing in common: good coffee is hard to find. Manual espresso makers need hot water from somewhere, while the OutIn Nano warms its own from a battery. The new Nano 2 focuses on what owners wanted more of: battery life. The details below come from OutIn's official product page and the company's launch announcement, published on 9 October 2026.

Twice the battery, faster charging

The big upgrade is power. OutIn says the Nano 2's 5,000mAh 3S battery system gives twice the endurance of the first Nano. That means up to nine cups per charge, with each brew heating 50 ml of water from 25°C to 93°C. Start with hot water from a kettle or flask and the heater has much less work to do, so you get more shots per charge.

Charging is faster too. The Nano 2 uses 45W USB-C Power Delivery and fully recharges in 100 minutes, compared with 180 minutes for the previous generation. OutIn also says a five-minute charge gives enough power for up to 30 extractions using pre-heated 93°C water, because the machine doesn't have to heat the water itself. As it charges over USB-C, you can top it up from a laptop charger or a big enough power bank; just check that yours can output 45W for the quoted speed.

Better extraction

OutIn has upgraded the heater to 120W, which it says heats room-temperature water in as little as 159 seconds. The pump reaches up to 21 bar, the water tank is 85 ml of SUS316L stainless steel, and a new 8 g coffee basket is meant to give a richer shot. You can brew with freshly ground coffee or with Nespresso Original Line-compatible capsules. OutIn notes that the original Nano's Basket Plus doesn't fit the Nano 2.

OutIn also says 89% of the Nano 2's kraft-paper packaging is biodegradable or recyclable. That claim covers the packaging, not the machine itself.

Why it matters for travellers

  • No kettle needed. It heats its own water, so it works at a campsite, on a train or in a hostel bunk room.
  • Nine coffees per charge. That covers a long weekend for one person, or a couple of days for two, before you need a socket.
  • One charger for everything. USB-C charging means it can share a charger with your phone and laptop.
  • Capsule backup. If you can't grind fresh beans on the road, Nespresso Original-compatible capsules are easy to pack.

At 740 g and about the size of a water bottle, it weighs more than a manual espresso maker. Our best travel coffee maker for Airbnb guide compares lighter options like the Wacaco Nanopresso and AeroPress Go Plus, which suit trips where you'll have a kettle.

Flying with the Nano 2

The 54Wh battery is below the 100Wh limit many airlines use for carry-on lithium batteries. OutIn says to follow airline rules, carry the Nano 2 only in your carry-on luggage and not use it during the flight. Rules differ between airlines and countries, so check before you travel. Our explainer on whether you can bring a power bank on a plane covers how battery limits work.

Pairing it with the rest of your kit

Off-grid coffee is better when you can still find the campsite. A travel eSIM keeps your maps and bookings working when you land. Compare Airalo and others in our best travel eSIM guide. If you're on the road for months, SafetyWing is one of the insurers in our travel insurance guide for nomads.

Availability

OutIn says the Nano 2 launches globally, with initial availability focused on North America and Europe. It went on sale at outin.com on 18 September 2026 and on Amazon on 8 October 2026. OutIn lists four colours: Canyon Green, Space Grey, Forest Green and Pearl White.

Our verdict

The OutIn Nano 2 tackles the one thing self-heating portable espresso makers most need: battery life. Up to nine cold-water brews per charge, a 100-minute USB-C recharge and capsule or ground-coffee brewing make it a genuinely useful gadget for camping, vanlife and backpacking with a kitchen-free bunk. At 740 g, it makes most sense if you'll brew every day.
